The reason why an h has been inserted into the conventional orthography of the name Gilan is unclear to us, unless it is meant to represent the initial palatal g; in the second syllable, however, we could find no trace of it among either the Slavs or the Albanians, for both simply pronounce it Gilan. However, Major Zach learned that the farmers also call it Gnilan, which, if it is not a pun, would mean "mud-place," and this could not be more fitting, for when riding through the town, the horses often waded up to their knees in the black swamp that serves as the pavement here, and at least affords the advantage of imposing on the traveler the most favorable idea of the extraordinary fertility of the soil on which Gilan lies.
