(Hordeum vulgare) Planta anual, herbácea, de la familia de las gramíneas, extensamente cultivada para la alimentación del hombre y los animales. Es más rústico que otros cereales, aún que el centeno; tiene el tallo cilíndrico, de hasta 2m de altura, con hojas lineales, e inflorescencias en espigas formadas por espiguillas uniformes y grano aguzado en los extremos.
