(Canis aureus) Mamífero carnívoro de la familia de Los cánidos, similar a sus parientes el lobo y la zorra, que puede pesar de entre ocho y quince kilogramos en su edad adulta. Tiene color similar al del león por el lomo, y blanco por el vientre. Habita preferentemente en regiones cálidas y desérticas, desde Europa oriental hasta Asia y África. Con este nombre también se conoce el Canis aureus maroccanus, una subespecie originaria de Marruecos.
