Ciervo grande que vive en América del Norte y se diferencia por características como un par de molares extra bajo la zona ocular, el mayor tamaño del cuerpo en la mayoría de los casos, la presencia de una "barba" más o menos espesa en el cuello de los machos y una tonalidad más clara en el cuerpo que en las patas, cabeza y cuello.
