His name was an old-fashioned Toivo, and he did not like it. His mother had given it to him as a memory of the forest road and of the miracle. She had rest her hope in him, but that should not be done: that kind of hope will starve any child and the mother as well to top it off.

The boy however was not named Penjami, but was christened Toivo after pastor Brummer. Back then Terijoki had many little Toivos.

I did get along well with the Toivo name for the first ten years, but then it started to disgust me a bit, when it began to feel like for example Sulo, Vieno, Uuno, Eemeli or something like that. So I started using the name Topi, which felt a lot better right away.
