Just as the Sanctuary is a matter that involves taking life, so too a consecrated thing is a matter that involves taking life, but physical contact does not involve taking life.

“מֵאֵימָתַי מַזְכִּירִין עַל הַגְּשָׁמִים רַבִּי אֱלִיעֶזֶר אוֹמֵר מִשְּׁעַת נְטִילַת לוּלָב רַבִּי יְהוֹשֻׁעַ אוֹמֵר מִשְּׁעַת הַנָּחָתוֹ:”

From when do we mention the rains? Rabbi Eliezer says, from the time of picking up the palm frond. Rabbi Yehoshua says, from the time it is put down.

“הַנּוֹטֵל גִּיד הַנָּשֶׁה צָרִיךְ שֶׁיִּטֹּל אֶת כֻּלּוֹ. רַבִּי יְהוּדָה אוֹמֵר כְּדֵי לְקַיֵּם בּוֹ מִצְוַת נְטִילָה:”

The one who removes the sciatic nerve must remove the entire thing. Rabbi Yehuda says, enough to fulfill the commandment of removing it.

“פָּחוֹת מִכְּבֵיצָה נְטִילָה וּבְרָכָה לָא בָּעֵי הָא כְּבֵיצָה בָּעֵי נְטִילָה וּבְרָכָה:”

Less than an egg's worth does not require washing and blessing, but an egg's worth does require washing and blessing.
