Nom donné par le chimiste allemand Friedrich Oskar (Fritz) Giesel à un élément chimique radioactif, accompagnant le lanthane et le cérium dans les minerais de pechblende, et qui se distingue par sa production d’une émanation gazeuse radioactive. Il s’avéra par la suite être l’actinium.
