Wahb ibn Munabbih said, "Japheth the son of Noah begat Gomer, Yavan, Tiras, Meshech, Gog, Tubal, Madai, and Fīrās. From Gomer came forth the Slavs, from Yavan the Spaniards (who are the [non-Berber and non-Hamitic] North Africans), from Tubal the Franks, from Tiras the Turks and Khazars. Madai begat Hamadān, after whom Hamadān [in Persia] was named, and Fīrās begat the people of Khorsan, and Gog begat [the nation of] Magog, who are very many. The homes of the Slavs, the [the offspring of] Yavan, and the Spaniards (the [non-Berber and non-Hamitic] North Africans) were in the lands of the Romans. Every band out of those three (Shem, Ham, and Japheth) sought some new land, peopled it, and pushed the others away from it." ... He said, "The robust Children of Japheth settled down in the north along the eastern wind, and Allah cleared their lands till its chilliness spiked, and He cleared their skies till not one of the Seven [Sisterly] Stars that pass around would pass above them since they became under the Little Bear and the the North Star. They were afflicted with pestilence, and Allah made whiteness and blondness [profuse] among them, and also ruggedness of face and smallness of eyes."
