Gas incoloro e inodoro. Después del hidrógeno, es el segundo elemento químico más abundante en el universo. En nuestro planeta se le encuentra en algunos depósitos naturales de gas, se le emplea para el llenado de globos y dirigibles, como líquido refrigerante de materiales superconductores criogénicos y como gas envasado en el buceo a gran profundidad. A diferencia del hidrógeno no es inflamable ni explosivo.
