Meaning of counterflooding | Babel Free

Noun CEFR C2
/ˈkaʊ.dɚˌflʌ.dɪŋ/

Definitions

The action of deliberately flooding spaces in one part (of a ship, boat, or other vessel) in order to counterbalance flooding occurring elsewhere in the vessel and keep the vessel level and on an even keel.

uncountable

Examples

“New Jersey has taken another underwater hit, this time amidships, and reports are coming in of one of the boiler rooms beginning to flood. Damage-control crews are doing their best, but, between this and the earlier hit, New Jersey is having to engage in some rather extensive counterflooding to stay on something approximating an even keel, and is falling back as speed begins to drop off.”
