[It was related] that Rāfiʿ ibn Khadīj married the daughter of Muhammad ibn Maslamah the ʾAnṣārid, and she remained with him till she aged [and became old], so he married a youthful woman, and he favored the young woman over her. Thus, she asked him to divorce her, and he did, but then he reversed it, and he reverted to favoring the young woman over her. And so she asked him to divorce her [again], and he did, but then he reversed it, and he [continued to] favor the young woman over her. so she asked him to divorce her, [but this time] he said, "Whatever you want. I can divorce you only one more time anyway, so if you want, you could stay [with me] in spite of what you perceive to be favoritism, or I could part from you. So she said, "I would rather stay in spite of the favoritism, so he kept her. And Rāfiʿ did not deem it wrongful [literally "a sin"] that she stayed with him despite the favoritism
