This portrayal differs greatly from the notion which foreigners commonly form of the Parisian working man’s character. His revolutionary disposition, his recourse to bloody violence, the Reign of Terror, the émeutes of 1848, and the Commune have led many to conceive of the Parisians as irascible, ruthless, at times savage—precisely the opposite of the calm, reflective, and gentle nature which Mr. Pauliat ascribes to them.
