“Að vísu gat komið fyrir, að abbadísirnar sjálfar væru ekki betri og sæju því fremur í gegnum fíngur við undirmenn sína; og gátu þær þó verið nógu strángar samt, við hinar.”

Admittedly, it could happen that the abbesses themselves were no better and would turn a blind eye to their subordinates' misdemeanours; yet they could still be strict enough with the others.

“Ýmis ólík atvik valda því, að þessar myndir hafa geymzt, en báðar eru þær rammíslenzkar, þar standa abbadísirnar jafnföstum fótum í íslenzkum jarðvegi og Staðarbærinn, gróinn í landslagið við hliðina á klaustri hins heilaga Benedikts.”

Various and diverse circumstances have caused these pictures to have been preserved, but both are quintessentially Icelandic; the abbesses stand as firmly on Icelandic soil as Staðarbær, grown into the landscape beside the monastery of Saint Benedict.

“Líklegt er að nunnuklaustrin tvö hafi verið miðstöðvar bóklegrar kvennamenningar og abbadísirnar og sumar nunnur hafi kunnað latínu.”

It is likely that the two nunneries were centres of literary women's culture, and that the abbesses and some of the nuns knew Latin.

“Síra Pètur Einarsson, bróðir herra Marteins, sigldi bæði í Þýzkaland og Danmörk, og framaðist mjög í þessum siglíngum; hann hèlt fyrstur Reynistaðarness klaustur eptir abbadísirnar, item var hann ráðsmaður í Skálholti eitt ár; hann var og nokkra stund umboðsmaður á Bessastöðum, því hann var lengi vel látinn af Dönskum, og halda sumir hann hafi [lítt hollur verið landinu.”

Father Peter Einarsson, brother of Mr. Marten, sailed to both Germany and Denmark, and rose to a high position through these voyages; he was the first to hold Reynistaðir Abbey after the abbesses, he was also provost at Skálholt for one year; he was also for a time the agent at Bessastaðir, as he was for a long time in the Danish service, and some hold that he was not very loyal to the country.

“Síra Jón Ólafsson á Melanesi segir, að Gunnar hafi aldrei sýslu haft, og tekið Reynistaðarklaustur næst eptir abbadísirnar.”

Sir Jon Olafsson of Melanes says that Gunnar never held a diocese, and took the Reynistaðir monastery next after the abbesses.

“Þar ræddi hún um íslensku abbadísirnar í klaustrum Íslands á miðöldum.”

There she spoke about the Icelandic abbesses in the monasteries of Iceland in the Middle Ages.
