“Ovim dakle jezikoslovnim načinom doznajemo, da su stanovnici, Velike Ilirske, to jest Horvatske, Slavonie, Dalmacie, dolnj́e Vugerske, Dolnj́e Štajerske, Krajnske, Koroške, Istrie, Bosne, Cerne Gore, Hercegovine, Dubrovnika, Serbske, Bugarske, i t. d. zatim žitelj́i Velike Polske, Galicie Poznanske, Velike Ćeske, Boemie Moravske i gornj́e Vugerske; i stanovnici Velike Ruske vsi skupa Slavjani brojem 80 milionov”

Through these linguistic means we ascertain that the inhabitants of Great Illyria, that is Croatia, Slavonia, Dalmatia, lower Hungary, Lower Styria, Carniola, Carinthia, Istria, Bosnia, Montenegro, Herzegovina, Ragusa, Serbia, Bulgaria, etc. then the inhabitants of Great Poland, Poznań Galicia, Great Czechia, Moravian Bohemia and upper Hungary; and the inhabitants of Great Russia are all together Slavs counting 80 million

Slavic languages are partly already too grammatically distant between each other to permit being naturally merged into a single language and reworked, partly on the other hand some of them are so philologically developed and rich in notable books, so that from the weakness of human egotism and vanity it can't be hoped that any of the main branches could sacrifice its independence and particularity, and as if forget and give up on its treasure that it has attained by now.

“[title] Ситнице єзыкословне”

Linguistic Fragments

Vostokov was explicitly linguistically oriented whereas the contemporary Slavic studies in Austro-Hungary were more aimed at broader philological areas.
