“There are large old clay-pits at Ballamona Mooar and Ballamona Beg which show from 2 to 5 feet of discoloured sandy wash with a little gravel and yellow sand, resting on thick warpy clay which is probably that of the middle portion of the drifts in the cliff-section; no stones were seen in this clay, but two or three far-travelled boulders lying on the floor of one of the pits had probably been dug from it. Several smaller pits, mostly without present exposures but apparently in similar deposits to the above, are scattered over the area farther east, between Ballamona and Close Taggard, and also along the northern margin of the Curragh north of Killane river, between Ballacain and Sandygate. I was at first of opinion that this warpy clay might represent the deposit in the stiller waters of the lake at the 40 foot level; but after re-examining the coast-sections between Jurby and Ballaugh, I concluded that it was of older date, and, though probably of fresh-water origin, was derived direct from the ice-sheet.”
“At the risk of sounding like a real geezer, I confess that in my lifetime I have done the following: played lacrosse with a stick made of warpy wood and gnarled natural gut at a time when STX had introdocued a flawless plastic-head lax stick with synthetic webbing; played tennis with a warpy, wooden small-head Spalding tennis racket a time when Wilson offered the all-steel T2000; went for long runs in canvas-topped Chuck Taylor All-Star sneakers at a time when adidas and Nike, among others, offered real running shoes; and skied in leather, double-lacing Humanic ski boots at a time when Lange, among others, offered buckling plastic ski boots.”
