Definitions

1. A device used to measure the distance between the apex of the cornea and the back surface of a spectacle lens.
2. A device used to measure distances during tunnel construction and other civil engineering projects.

Examples

“This instrument looks like a small caliper. While your patient is wearing the trial frames, ask him to close his eyes. Gently place the flat end of the vertex distometer against his closed lid. Then open the caliper so the other end touches the back surface of the lens. Read the distance in mellimeters off the gauge.”
