คำนิยาม

act which, whether done by a priest or layperson, will be condemned by the world, because it is wrong or inappropriate by nature, such as murder, theft, etc; as opposed to ปัณณัติวัชชะ (bpan-nát-dtì-wát-chá), act which, if done by a priest, will be condemned because it violates a religious rule, but, if done by a layperson, may not be considered wrong or appropriate, such as eating at a wrong time.

“การกินอาหารตอนเย็นของพระสงฆ์เป็นความผิดแบบปัณณัติวัชชะซึ่งเป็นกฎพิเศษที่พระพุทธเจ้ากำหนดขึ้นเพื่อสร้างบรรทัดฐานของสังคมสงฆ์เท่านั้น มิใช่ความผิดตามธรรมชาติที่ให้โทษหรือทำร้ายผู้ใด ฉะนั้น สิ่งนี้จึงมิใช่โลกวัชชะ”

A [Buddhist] priest eating food in the evening constitutes an offence in the form of paṇṇattivajja, which is a special rule established by the Buddha in order to create a standard for the holy order only, not an offence by nature which produces a bad or injurious outcome to anyone. For that reason, this act is not lokavajja.

“ในพระพุทธศาสนานั้น หากภิกษุใดทำกิจที่เป็นโลกวัชชะเป็นอาจิณ ถือเป็นปาราชิก คือ หมดสภาพจากความเป็นพระ ต้องถูกสึกออกไปเป็นชาวบ้านธรรมดา”

In Buddhism, if any monk habitually does an act which constitutes lokavajja, he will be deemed a gravest violator, that is to say, he will lose his priesthood or will be defrocked and become a layperson.

“ความผิดที่เป็นโลกวัชชะนั้น เช่น การทะเลาะวิวาท ทำโจรกรรม ฆ่าคนตาย ความผิดอย่างนี้แม้คนทั่วไปทำก็ถูกตำหนิติเตียน”

A [monastic] offence which is lokavajja is affray, robbery, or murder for example. Such an offence is condemnable even when committed by a layperson.
