There is no need for plastic waste in electricity and heat production, but as long as plastic exists in society, energy recovery through incineration is the most resource-efficient way to remove toxic, contaminated, or worn-out plastic. Energy recovery should only be used for fractions that cannot be utilized higher up in the waste hierarchy.
