Chiang Kai-shek also known as Chiang Chung-cheng was a prominent Chinese military and political leader who led the Kuomintang (KMT: Chinese Nationalist Party) and led the Republic of China as its President (1928-1975). After occupying Manchuria in 1931, Japan set its sights on mainland China. When China entered the Sino-Japanese War in 1937, he fought alone as the generalissimo of the National Revolutionary Army for more than four years, but in 1941, he succeeded in drawing its allies, the United States and Britain, into war against Japan. During WWII, he was a key Allied leder of the Allied Powers. After losing the Chinese Civil War to the Chinese Communist Party, he retreated to Taiwan, where he continued to govern until his death.
