a type of mora, variously called in English (literal translation) special mora, (Kubozono Haruo) non-syllabic mora, non-head mora, (Laurence Labrune) deficient mora, unique in that it cannot form a 音(おん)節(せつ) (onsetsu, “syllable”) on its own, that it never occurs at the beginning of a word, and that is incapable of acting as an アクセント核(かく) (akusento-kaku, “accent kernel”); morae like these include the 促(そく)音(おん) (sokuon, “moraic obstruent”), the 撥(はつ)音(おん) (hatsuon, “moraic nasal”), the second half of a 長(ちょう)音(おん) (chōon, “long vowel”), and the second half of a 二(に)重(じゅう)母(ぼ)音(いん) (nijū boin, “diphthong”)
