An accentual unit formed by a sequence of one or more morphemes is called an accentual phrase. The boundaries of an accentual phrase are always also the boundaries of morphemes. Accentual phrases and phrases often coincide. In the Tokyo dialect, there is at most one point within an accentual phrase where the pitch drops.

Although "accent phrases" are phonological divisions, they are known to be mismatched with syntactic divisions in sentences.
