In the city of Calcutta, according to the correct count, there are about sixty Armenian houses. However, very few of them wear Armenian-style clothing. Their headwear is a new-fashioned type made of black velvet, i. e. խատիֆէ (xatifē), and is called Qajar's hat or Manilla hat. Even the elderly now wear it.

Brocades with gold thread, fabrics of silk, velvet (бархат (barxat)), and other various textiles that came from those factories were of exceedingly fine quality, beautiful, and most noble. They were in no way inferior to those of the French and the English, to the point that even the Imperial Court of St. Petersburg found them suitable for its use.

For with the floral velvets that were produced in those factories, they would cover the walls of the Imperial Palace, as S. Glinka also writes in his book Review of the history of the Armenian people, volume 2, page 247.
