Suppose there are fifty innocent people in the city. Would You still destroy it, and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty good people inside it?
“אָמַר לִי, רַבִּי, מֵאֵיזֶה מָקוֹם אַתָּה. אָמַרְתִּי לוֹ, מֵעִיר גְּדוֹלָה שֶׁל חֲכָמִים וְשֶׁל סוֹפְרִים אָנִי.”
He said to me, "Rabbi, what place are you from?" I said to him, "From a great city of scholars and sages am I."
“וַיִּיקַץ יַעֲקֹב מִשְּׁנָתוֹ וַיֹּאמֶר אָכֵן יֵשׁ יְהוָה בַּמָּקוֹם הַזֶּה וְאָנֹכִי לֹא יָדָעְתִּי׃”
Jacob awoke from his sleep. 'God is truly in this place,' he said, 'but I did not know it.'
“יצאתה בת קול ואמרה מה לכם אצל רבי אליעזר שהלכה כמותו בכל מקום”
And a divine voice came down and said, "What do you have against Rabbi Eliezer, as the halakhah is according to him in every place?"
“וַיֹּאמֶר בַּת־מִי אַתְּ הַגִּידִי נָא לִי הֲיֵשׁ בֵּית־אָבִיךְ מָקוֹם לָנוּ לָלִין׃”
'Whose daughter are you?' he asked. 'If you would, tell me if there is a place in your father's house for us to spend the night.'
“וא״ר לוי דבר זה מסורת בידינו מאבותינו מקום ארון אינו מן המדה”
And Rabbi Levi said, "This matter is a tradition in our hands from our ancestors - the space taken by the ark is not in that measurement."
“וַיַּעֲבֹר אַבְרָם בָּאָרֶץ עַד מְקוֹם שְׁכֶם עַד אֵלוֹן מוֹרֶה וְהַכְּנַעֲנִי אָז בָּאָרֶץ׃”
Abram traveled through the land as far as the area of Shechem, coming to the Plain of Moreh. The Canaanites were then in the land.
“רַבִּי יְהוֹשֻׁעַ אוֹמֵר, הַמְהַלֵּךְ בִּמְקוֹם סַכָּנָה, מִתְפַּלֵּל תְּפִלָּה קְצָרָה.”
Rabbi Yehoshua says, "A traveler in a region of danger prays a shortened prayer."
“מִתְּחִלָּה עוֹבְדֵי עֲבוֹדָה זָרָה הָיוּ אֲבוֹתֵינוּ וְעַכְשָׁיו קֵרְבָנוּ הַמָּקוֹם לַעֲבֹדָתוֹ”
In the beginning, our forefathers were worshipers of paganism, and now the Omnipresent has brought us close to his service.
