Abu al-'Ayna narrated: The king of Rome's courier had come to al-Mutawakkil's court. One day I was sitting with him and wine was served. He asked: "How is it that in you Muslims' [holy] book both wine and pork have been ruled as prohibited, but you implement only one of these two rulings and not the other?" I said to him: "I don't drink wine. You should ask someone who does." He said: "The reason is that you have found better substitutes for pork, such as poultry and lamb, but you have not found anything similar to wine, and for this reason you have not obeyed its prohibition." Abu al-'Ayna narrated: I felt ashamed and had no words to say to him.
