Because, on the one hand, it is indeed the abstraction from the place from which they come, from that which is unique, separating them from their culture and original environment, that makes them communicable to other cultures: or in other words, it is not only because the West promoted them in the moment in which it attained the height of its ability and could claim, by imperialism, to impose them onto the rest of the world, that people discuss them today among the nations; but also because that status of abstractness makes them isolable, and therefore intellectually manipulable, comfortably identifiable and transferable, and makes them a privileged object – a tool – for dialogue.
