“In 1900 it was found that the stability of the viaduct was threatened by colliery workings. To overcome this, the G.W.R. obtained an Act of Parliament on August 8, 1902, authorising the purchase of all the land, mines and mineral rights within eight chains of any portion of the viaduct.
