Gum of damīṯā: This is the gum of a tree in Persia. The best is the one transparent with a tinge towards red. This gum is of a strong sharpness, hotness, and dilutive. It is gut against flatulences in the stomach and intestines and rarefies the pituita in the stomach, relaxes it and assists digestion. It is similar to asafoetida in its power save that its smell is not repelling.
